1-8 Handling the Compass
Proper handling of the lensatic compass is mandatory. Improper handling and
use of the compass can cause damage that will result in incorrect readings.
Protection - When traveling with the compass unfolded, make sure the rear sight
is folded down onto the bezel ring. This will lock the floating dial and prevent
vibration, as well as protect the crystal and rear sight from being damaged.
Accuracy - A compass in good working condition is very accurate. However, you
must periodically check your compass on a known line of direction. If your compass
has more than three (3) degrees of variation, do not use it.
Effects of Metal and Electricity - Metal objects
and electrical sources can affect the performance
of a compass. To ensure the proper functioning of
your compass, keep a safe distance from the
following metal objects:
a. high-tension power lines..................................55 meters
b. field gun, truck, or tank.....................................10 meters
c. telegraph, telephone wires, and barbed wire...10 meters
d. machine gun......................................................2 meters
e. rifle....................................................................½ meter
f. steel rim glasses..............................................1/3 meter
Inspection - Compasses are delicate instruments and should be cared for accordingly.
Conduct a detailed inspection before you use your compass. The most important
part of the compass is the floating dial. It must float freely. You must also
ensure the sighting wire is straight, the glass encasement is not broken, and
the numbers on the dial are readable.
